Credit card debt is something that no one wants to find themselves floundering in. However, more than half of the people in the United States are at the point in which their credit card debt is taking over their lives. These people are making the minimum payments and finding that they are really only paying their card down by a few bucks each month. It is a heartbreaking tale since the person will find that it is a vicious cycle that never seems to end. There are some things that the person can do in order to lower their credit card debt by quite a bit. However, they need to realize that these are things that are going to change their life and it will be hard to stick to, but well worth it in the end.

First off, they need to set a budget for themselves. Eliminate the use of credit cards from your spending at all. Your goal is to live off of what you make and that is it. You will find that this is easier said than done for most people since they spend quite a bit of things on credit. Once you budget your life according to what you make, you want to take however much you can and pay on the credit cards.

For some people a good idea is to start with the lower balanced card and pay this off in order to feel as though they are accomplishing something. It will also help them to add more money to the higher balanced and interest cards that they have. They will find that just by paying an extra ten dollars throughout the month on a credit card that they can very well have made an extra payment by the end of the year on the card. This is something that is going to help get the balance down faster.

Once the person does pay off the card, this does not mean that they should start using it again. Put the card up and make sure that if you do use it that it is for an emergency only and you will not regret doing this. Overall, with some simple life style changes the person can get it to where their credit card debt is not swallowing them whole.

Plastic money has brought phenomenal changes in individuals’ lives for now they can afford anything and almost everything without major appraisals in their salaries, but for a short period of time. The major problem caused by this so called blessing is that spenders go on using it without realizing that even credit cards have a particular limit. Most of us try to buy all the luxuries with credit cards including designer stuff, restaurant meals and even vacation packages. When the card finally reaches at that point, user cannot even use it in emergencies. Moreover, when the payment date arrives, the majority of shopaholics are unable to pay their due bills. Debt providing companies, on the other hand, are making fortunes by charging high interest rates on such cards making many borrowers go bankrupt at some point of time as gross interest becomes a big chunk adding up to the total amount.

In order to avoid such issues, it is always advisable to carry out an extensive research before applying for a credit card. Many firms now issue low interest credit cards, but for that the applicant should have an excellent credit payment record. With these types of cards the total payable amount would be lower comparatively favoring the borrower. Unfortunately, not many people are able to get their hands on such cards for a simple reason that if they were able to be regular enough in making all their payment right on time, why would they need a credit card anyway?

Excellent credit history holders, however, can take advantage by getting one of the lower interest rate credit cards as they will be able to avoid a big expense this way. Keeping a variety of credit cards has its very own pros and cons. There is no doubt that one has a larger pool of credit lying which can be used whenever needed, but then again, the user will be sinking himself deep into the puddle of debt. First you will be creating your lifestyle with the help of plastic money and later on you would be using the same mode just to maintain it. All this is going to bring along huge bill payments and of course the “low” interest expense. These concerns have brought a lot of criticism for plastic money, but the fact of the matter remains that if they are used sensibly, with all their benefits, credit cards truly are a blessing.

Many people who have credit cards often have the question as to how they can get their credit card company to change their annual percentage rate. This is an important aspect that adds up to your monthly credit card bills increasing a bit every month because this rate is added onto your balance at the end of every month. You can change the interest rate on your cards by asking your credit card company, however, before you just jump in and ask, you need to know a few things first.

For starters, you should do some research and find what the average interest rate is. If your annual interest rate is more than average, you have a better chance of getting your credit card company to change yours because of this. Especially, since it is the competition that is offering lower rates. Your current credit company does not want to lose your business, so in this instance that are willing to lower the annual percentage rate.

Your next step is to choose a rate that you believe would be appropriate. Remember, that the credit card will accept or deny this new rate based on your payment history with them. This means, if you have made consecutive payments and never or rarely have been late, they are more than likely going to agree. If you have a bad payment history with the credit card company do not expect them to change the rate.

Now, you need to call customer service and with your wanted rate in hand and the reasons why this change should be made, plead your case to the customer assistance person. Many times, these people are not authorized to make changes, if this is the case, then ask to speak to a manager. With the manager you need to plead your case once again. Remember to rely on the research concerning annual percentage interest rates that you have done and on your own payment history.

Many times, it will take more than one call to get the rate changed, this should be expected. In all reality, many people try for several months to get this performed. Once the credit card company agrees, make sure to check your statements to verify that the rate has been changed. If it hasn’t, you need to call customer service once again and ask why it hasn’t taken affect.

Changing your annual percentage rate is something that will benefit you greatly. However, do not expect the process to be fast nor easy because more times than not it is far from this.

Why do people use credit cards? The obvious answer is to purchase items that they would otherwise not have the funds to purchase. However, there are other aspects that factor in to why people use credit cards.

For starters, credit cards offer a certain amount of flexibility for consumers. For example, if a payment or bill is due before pay day, a credit card can come in handy to cover this charge. For those that do not have credit cards they will have to wait until next pay day which could result in late charges or whatnot. By using a credit card, you avoid the interruption of service or those late fees for a late payment. Customers who do this, can then use their paycheck to pay off the amount that they charged. This is a great option to have, but the consumer must remember to pay off the card instead of just letting it pile up. When this happens, it is usually when people begin to get into credit card debt trouble.

Secondly, credit cards offer more security than using checks or cash. How is that? Well, many credit card companies offer card holders towing or roadside assistance for when they are traveling. Which is a huge plus for those that travel frequently, and they do not have to buy coverage for this particular aspect. In addition, credit cards cover fraudulent charges on the card, which is something that most banks should offer also, but the credit card companies make it much easier for the person to declare that a charge is fraudulent.

Credit cards are easier to travel with when compared to cash and traveler checks. Most credit card companies automatically adjust to the currency when used in other areas of the world, which is something that cash money cannot do. In addition, it is much safer to travel with a credit card. If your money gets stolen, it is gone and you are left to figure out what to do. If your credit card is stolen, you can report it stolen and not have to worry about it being used as it can simply be reported to the company and stolen and put an alert out when anyone tries to use it.

Most often credit cards are used to shop online. This is something that has become widely popular in recent years and requires that the shopper have a credit card since no cash or checks are usually accepted. In addition, if a dispute should arise between the customer and the seller, the credit card statement will prove whether or not the item was paid for.

When credit card charging has become a way of life, instead of a tool for convenience, then the result can be no other than becoming knee-deep in credit card depth. Although credit cards can be convenient in many ways, not knowing how to manage their use effectively will land consumers in financial trouble. It is easy to fall into this routine; all it takes is to keep a balance in a credit card monthly. The debt will continue to grow and the consumer will fail to catch up to the debt.

The first sign of being knee-deep in credit card debt is when you are unable to pay the full balance by the end of the month and have to rely on minimum payments. This should be a sign to stop charging immediately and take control of your debt. Although many situations such as illness, accidents, and other things out of our control happen, many times, credit card debt is due to overspending habits. If this is the case, immediate intervention is necessary so things do not get worse – financial ruin.

Depending on the amount of debt owed, consumers can take control of their financial lives and repay debt. There are many things a person can do to manage credit card debt. One of them is to contact creditors and explain the situation, asking for payment arrangements to repay your debt; most likely they will be willing to work with you. Ignoring the issue and sending payments late or no payments at all will make things worse – interest and fees will continue to accrue and your debt will continue to grow, ending your account into a debt collector agency. At this point negotiations will be harder. If you fail to respond to the attempts of collecting your debt or make payment arrangements with the collection agency, the next step for your creditor is to sue you. Contrary to popular belief, credit cards can sue you and take you to court in an attempt to collect their due money; they will also attach any legal fees to your debt.

If you are unsure of how to proceed, or negotiating directly with creditors have not worked to your advantage, then consulting a reputable credit counseling agency may be of help. A fee will be attached to this counseling type, but these agencies will help consumers create a budget and negotiate their credit card debt with the creditors, to work out a repayment plan. Creating a debt management plan with an agency ensures that you pay your debt as the payments go through them to the creditors.

A choice that might work for some people, but not others is to consolidate debt. However, by using a mortgage or consolidating loan a house is attached as collateral, converting a non-secure debt into secured debt. This is not the best solution for many, as it will put a home at risk.

Finally, people who are beyond these solutions opt for bankruptcy, but will have to start anew rebuilding their credit. One thing is for sure, counseling is necessary to manage a large amount of debt.

Everyone has run into the times when they need cash, but only have a credit card. So the decision is made to withdraw cash from an ATM using the credit card. Usually, people never think twice about this decision. However, taking a cash advance on a credit card can be a very costly decision. It is a decision that many people come to regret after taking a look at their bill.

For starters, most credit companies add an additional two or four interest rate on cash advances alone. This means that instead of paying the average sixteen percent interest rate, you are now paying a twenty percent interest rate. What is more is that this interest will continue to mount on until the credit card is paid in full in many cases. Not many credit card companies will allow the consumer to call and specify that their current payment is to be applied to the cash advance. The credit card company is making money off of the cash advance, so they are less likely to work with the consumer.

Secondly, there is no grace period for cash advances. The interest begins to mount onto the amount of cash withdrawn once it is taken from the ATM. So for those who shrug the added interest off and say that they will pay it all off on the next bill…think again.

The cash advance rules that credit card companies have are no secret. However, the majority of credit cardholders have no idea that these rules even exist. By law, the credit card company has to give this information. It is usually found on the back of the credit card agreement when the consumer opens the card, but not many take the time to read the very fine print on the back.

So what should a consumer do? Many times there are no ways to get around taking cash from the credit card. We have all been in situations where the car had to get fixed or the electric had to be paid. That is the way life goes. However, planning for these little occurrences can help out tremendously. For starters, have a savings account to dip into when little things like this happen. This will lessen the extent to which you rely on the credit card. Secondly, if this is not an option and you must use a credit card, make sure that you shop around for a credit card that offers the lowest fees and rates.

Those who are unhappy with their current card may be toying with the idea of switching cards, which usually means transferring balances from one card to another. This is a great way to find a better card that offers a lower interest rate and whatever else the person finds important. However, transferring balances can also lead to a huge headache, not to mention a huge dent in the wallet.

There are a few questions for anyone interested in getting a new credit card should ask. First, how long does the introductory rate last? Many companies make the offer out to be a low interest rate forever, though that is rarely the case. Secondly, when the introductory rate ends, what is the interest rate then? Many people have found that sticking with their old card is just as good after this rate has been discussed. Third of all, does the introductory rate apply to the balances that are transferred from other credit cards? The person should also ask about late fees, annual fees and over-the-limit fees before they decide that switching to a new card is the best choice.

One of the things to look at for when deciding a new card is the route to go and when transferring balances from one card to the next is the transfer few. Most new credit cards will say that no transfer fee is involved. However, in the fine print this rule only applies to the first initial transfer fee. If you are transferring two cards to one, then one card may get a fee and be treated as a cash advance. This may mean an extra four percent interest on the amount. Which means that a low nine percent rate, just became a thirteen percent rate. If this is the route that person chooses, it is vital that you keep paying on the old credit card before the transfer occurs. This type of information is still reported to the credit agencies, thus it could have a negative affect on the credit score.

Above all else, when looking through new credit card offers, read everything. This cannot be stressed enough. Many people are upset to find that once the balances have been transferred that they are paying just as much, if not more than the previous card due to transfer fees. The fine print on the back of these credit card offers usually contain the vital information that consumers skip over. Also, remember that if something does not make sense, call and ask someone about it.

Credit cards are one of those things that everyone has. However, many people find themselves in a pinch at times, thus these credit cards may go unpaid. Many people end up having to go through a credit card debt relief program to get back on their feet again. So what happens to these people? Do they never own another credit card?

For those who have found that there credit is damaged due to past problems with credit, there are still credit cards out there for them, if they want them. The main reason that most of these people will once again own a credit card is to increase their credit rating that took a plummet from past credit problems. However, these people should be prepared to pay the consequences of these past transgressions. Higher interest rates, doubled late fees, as well as annual fees on credit cards are associated for those with damaged credit.

The average interest rate for a credit card for a person with damaged credit is in the twenties. This will vary and depends on the amount of time that has lapsed since last having a credit card, the current credit rating, as well as how much credit card debt the person was in. The average credit card has an interest rate that can be as low as nine percent upwards to fifteen percent.

The annual fee is another thing that is added onto credit cards for those with damaged credit. This fee is charged to the credit card and happens once a year. The amount of the fee ranges depending upon the company. For example, thirty five dollars seems to be an average rate. However, those with damaged credit may be paying fifty or seventy five dollars a year just to have a credit card.

There are ways that once this type of credit card is in place that the person can gradually lower their interest rate. Paying off the card every month is a great way to prove to the company that the previous credit problems are no longer there. After a year or so of solid payments, the company will be willing to negotiate the rates. This will also help to improve the credit rating of the individual.

Once this credit card has repaired the person’s credit, the person can then begin the search for a card that has a lower interest rate or no annual fees. However, occurrences on the credit report stay in place for at least five to seven years. It is important to note that during this time the person is still considered high risk, thus the high interest rates will be offered.

Every big store offers its own version of credit card. Their marketing staffs always try to tempt you into applying by offering 10% or 20% discounts, free invitations to special events, quick notifications on discounts or no interest for a few months. But if you plan to manage your cards smartly, you should only have less than three. The best choices are standard credit cards with better rewards and lower rates than store cards.

Here are the six reasons to avoid store credit cards:

1. High interest rates. Store cards usually charge you 20% of interest or more. So if you have a huge balance, you will soon be paying a lot more in interest than what you save on purchases.

2. Useless perks. Higher interest rates may quickly wipe out whatever benefits you earned with the card. And racking up many points on your card may not do much good if you plan to buy a huge couch.

3. Endless appeals to spend more and more. Research shows that buyers with store cards spend more than twice compared to regular buyers. Merchants believe that by observing you and they know that you’re more susceptible to certain types of advertisements. Reward programs are tailored to make you think, “What should I buy to quickly earn the discount or gift certificate?”

4. Misleading promotions. You may have heard this: Charge your refrigerator, high-definition TV or kitchen set to a store card to get no interest period for more than a year. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? But these offers come with a big catch. If you fail to make a payment, even one cent less, at the deadline date, you are required to pay for all the interest.

5. Unclear agreement. Impulsively applying for a store credit card at the promotional kiosk or cash register is always a rushed, thoughtless process. You will almost certainly miss essential information described inside the “Terms and Conditions.”

6. It can be bad for your credit score. Whenever you apply for a store card, the credit score drops about 5 points. You will suffer even more if you use more than one cards.

Many store credit cards are compatible with American Express and Mastercard, it means you can use them in most places, but any rewards can only be redeemed at a store, and they are often unimpressive. Try to keep your wallet or purse sleek by trusting only on a low-interest and rewarding major credit card.

Racking up plenty of money on unneeded purchases with your credit card is very easy to do and spending on your card can be really costly if you fail to pay in full each month. But, plastic can still allow you to build credit, gain reward points, and limit risks on bad purchases.

Credit cards aren’t inherently evil. They do provide a useful service for people. However there is a shared responsibility between consumers and credit-card issuers. Consumers should use credit wisely, and know if they can afford what they buy. In the meantime, credit cards issuers should give consumers a square deal, without tricks and traps.

These are four situations where you should use the plastic:

1. Ordering online or making major purchases
Lenders often say credit cards can protect people when making major purchases. With a credit card you have bigger leverage to return an item than you would when using cash. Card issuers will step in to help you settle your issues. If you sense a problem, you should call your card company and it will put a hold on your purchase. Credit cards can be practical when people order products. If you can’t get the items you were promised, it is possible to get the charges reversed really quickly.

2. When traveling
A card is safer than carrying cash during a travel and they are also essential because many companies related to tourism industry (restaurants, hotels, airlines, etc) only accept credit card. Some credit cards have special arrangements with hoteliers, food and beverage outlets and transporters so that the cardholders can get a discount when charging their card for such expenses.

3. When purchasing necessities
Credit cards also can be practical in emergency situations, for example a medical crisis. Many times what we consider as essential, really isn’t too essential, but if we are sick, and you don’t have insurance or money, then paying medical bills is a good enough reason to charge a credit card. Charging on something that could be considered an investment, such as college textbooks or stocks may also make sense. Still, people should be wary of justifying the use of credit cards based solely on the hope and expectation of future profit. The problem is that monthly payments come due rather quickly, and it would be quite costly to pay the interest in just five years.

4. When you have a budget
Statements from credit cards may help with budgeting. People can put together their monthly budgets based on their expenses in the previous year. Most lenders have services to track spending. It’s fantastic when you can gauge your spending by reading credit card statements.
